Learn exactly how the BIPOC Athlete Fund works, who can apply, what we look for in applications, and what happens after you apply.
Every application we receive matters. We read each one carefully, and we want you to know exactly what we look for when deciding who to support. No mystery, no guesswork. Here is how it works.
The BIPOC Athlete Fund covers your race entry fee for one of our partner races. But it does not stop there. We also connect you with mentorship and bring you into a community of athletes who are building something together.
When we invest in an athlete, we are investing in a relationship. We cover your entry, pair you with a mentor, and bring you into community. In return, we ask you to show up — not just on race day, but for the people and the work that make this possible.
To apply, you need to meet a few basic requirements:
We also prioritize applicants with underrepresented identities within communities of color, including women, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, and people with disabilities. The sport of trail running has significant access gaps, and we want to help close them.
Our application has six steps. Here is what each one tells us and why it matters.
We partner with specific races because they share our values. When you choose a race, we want to understand your connection to it. We also ask if this is your first trail race — first-timers are a priority for us.
We want to know you as a person, not just as an athlete. What communities do you belong to? What role does the outdoors play in your life? What has your relationship with trail running looked like, and what has made it easy or hard to access the sport?
There is no formula here. Just connecting with you.
This is not just about needing funding. We want to understand why this specific race matters to you at this moment in your life. What would it mean for you to cross that finish line?
This is the most important part of the application. Tierra Libre is built on mutual investment. Every person in this community — athletes, mentors, volunteers — contributes their time, energy, and care.
We want to know: how will this experience move beyond you? How do you see it creating a ripple in your life, your community, and in trail running? We prioritize athletes who see this as the beginning of something, not just a one-time event.
Our mentorship program pairs you with an experienced athlete for regular check-ins leading up to race day. This is not coaching. It is a steady relationship with someone who has been where you are.
Mentorship is not required, but we prioritize athletes who want this connection. Some of our strongest community members started as mentees. The real magic of Tierra Libre happens in these conversations — the training questions, the race-week nerves, the encouragement from someone who gets it.
The final step is reviewing everything before you submit. Our team reads every application and follows up by email.
Our team reviews every application. We will follow up by email to let you know our decision. If you are selected (we have 92% acceptance rate!), we will cover your race entry, connect you with a mentor (if you opted in), and welcome you into the community.
If you are not selected this time, we encourage you to stay connected and apply again for a future race. This decision is never a reflection of your worth as an athlete.
